Guest Speaker: Peter Heller
Colorado Whitewater is thrilled to announce Peter Heller will be the featured presenter at CW’s Fall Dinner. Peter is a celebrated adventure writer, author of four award-winning books of literary nonfiction, and a critically acclaimed novelist. A longtime contributor to NPR, and a former contributing editor at Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal, and National Geographic Adventure, Peter has traveled the world as an expedition kayaker, writing about challenging descents in the Pamirs, the Tien Shan mountains, the Caucuses, Central America and Peru. He was the first man, with Kiwi paddler Roy Bailey, to kayak the Muk Su River in the High Pamirs of Tadjikistan, a 17-day trip of massive whitewater through a canyon inhabited by wolves and snow leopards.

In the winter of 2002 Peter joined, on the ground team, the most ambitious whitewater expedition in history as it made its way through the treacherous Tsangpo Gorge in Eastern Tibet. He chronicled what has been called The Last Great Adventure Prize for Outside, and in his book Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibet’s Tsangpo River. The book won a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly, was number three on Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List” of all pop culture, and a Denver Post review ranked it “up there with any adventure writing ever written.”

Peter’s debut novel, The Dog Stars (2012), was selected as an Atlantic Monthly and San Francisco Examiner Best Book of the Year, while Heller’s second novel, The Painter (2014), won the Colorado Book Award and the prestigious Reading the West Book Award. Celine (2017), Peter’s third novel, was a Library Journal editor’s pick.

Heller’s most recent novel is the critically acclaimed National Bestseller, The River, which tells the story of two college students on a wilderness canoe trip–a gripping tale of a friendship tested by fire, whitewater, and violence. “I came up as a kayaker and love running rivers I’d never run,” Heller recently explained to reporter Jennifer Mulson. “Narrative can be like a river. You follow it around a corner, and you never know what’s going to be there. Before you know it, the story comes into something I’d been really concerned about for a long time.” CW’s Fall Dinner will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at the Wheatridge Recreation Center. This special event is sure to sell out quickly. Don’t miss it. Sign up soon.
