Arkansas River Weekend - July 15 - 17, 2022!

7/14/22 LATE REGISTRATIONS: The list of registrations has already been printed. If you register Thursday or later YOU MUST BRING THE CONFIRMATION EMAIL WHEN YOU CHECK IN AT THE EVENT. Ideally this would be printed since cell service at the site is uncertain but on your phone is okay if you can show the email.

7/12/22 UPDATE REGARDING SITE ACCESS: There is underground utility construction going on just South of The Midland Stop that will make accessing the site from South Main Street a little more difficult for cars and probably impossible for trailers. To mitigate this we are planning on moving the event entrance to the West a bit. All trailers must enter the site via Toby Lane, not South Main Street. This will be the easiest access for other vehicles as well. You should get there by taking Riverpark Road from Arizona Street. If helpful, you can put the address 1101 Riverpark Road into your GPS and it should help get you to Toby Lane.

We're excited to be boating the Arkansas River together again in 2022! We're planning to have cruises for most skill levels, ranging from easy runs like Big Bend to Salida to the more challenging runs like the Numbers. (Let us know if you're willing to lead or sweep a cruise.) We're planning on camping at South Main in downtown Buena Vista with all the restaurants and amenities that are available - and the Buena Vista Whitewater Park in walking distance. Many thanks to South Main Realty for letting us use the space. They've been a great friend of the whitewater community. The town of Buena Vista has also issued the required special event permit. As always we need volunteers so please email Gail Tubbs at gail80220@gmail.com if you are willing to lead a cruise, sweep, or help with registration. In the email, please let us know what sections of river and days you're interested in.

We will be meeting at 9:00 each morning to divide into cruise groups. Each group will then sort out their shuttles. Day attendees should arrive at the site by 8:30 to check in and sign up for cruises. Don't be that person who shows up late and makes 100 people wait for the meeting to start while you fill out your release formYou don't have to be in your pfd yet but be prepared to leave to go boating shortly after the meeting. .

As a reminder, river weekends are not instructional events and are not suitable for those who have not had instruction or experience in whitewater kayaking or rafting. For those of you who are interested in instruction, our friends at Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center (RMOC) are offering a Level 4 - Advanced Kayak Technique on Saturday, July 16th. Sign up directly with RMOC. They can also offer individual instruction (on the river or a roll instruction session in their pool) and we may work on getting a swift water rescue class scheduled with them that weekend.

ACA Membership: CW encourages our members to also be members of the American Canoe Association (ACA). Not only does your $40/year individual membership support the mission and programs of the ACA, it also saves CW $10 per participant per event that we have to otherwise pay ACA for insurance, which frees up your CW membership dues for other CW programs. You can join here if interested Join ACA. Please bring your ACA number to registration because we need to have it on the release in order to save the $10.

CAMPING / REGISTRATIONS: We will be camping near South Main Street in Buena Vista.  Specifically we'll be in the large open space that is South of the Midland Stop coffee shop at 801 Front Loop, Buena Vista CO 81211. We're asking people to register as either planning on the group camping area or staying elsewhere as a day participant so that we can monitor how many people will be camping. Also let us know if you'll be bringing a raft or camper trailer so we can evaluate when to cut off registrations. This will also help with how many porta pots we need as the camping area is completely undeveloped. Other than the porta pots (and restaurants and bars) you must plan on being self supported and bring whatever water you need. Please do not arrive at the camping area before 3:00 Friday afternoon. All participants must vacate the camping area by 10:00 on Monday morning.

SOME GUIDELINES:

  • Registration / Membership: All participants must be a member of Colorado Whitewater and must have registered prior to the event. This includes everyone attending regardless of whether you are boating or not and includes significant others and children.
  • Release Forms: Upon check-in you will be asked to sign the a release form for the entire weekend. This will be required for camping as well as participating on any cruises. You will receive a wristband so that cruise leaders know you have registered and signed all paperwork.
  • Skills / Gear: As a reminder, river weekends are not instructional events and are not suitable for those who have not had instruction or experience in whitewater kayaking or rafting. Although we're all there to support one another, plan on boating within your skill level. Minimum necessary equipment for all boaters includes helmet, river shoes, type 3 or type 5 personal flotation device, and appropriate dry top or other layers. Kayakers should also have their float bags and skirt. Inflatable kayaks and rafts must be intended for whitewater use - not the vulnerable ones from department or sporting goods stores.
  • Dogs: Dogs must be on leash and under your control at all times. You cannot leave your dog tied up or in your tent while you go boating. Obviously, you have to pick up after your dog, too.
  • Fires: No open wood fires are allowed in the camping area. Subject to any fire restrictions at the time or other events taking place, we will try to have a group campfire at the South Main firepit. Subject to any fire restrictions, you can have propane fires and stoves at your individual campsites so long as they can be switched off if needed.
  • Quiet Time: A quiet time of 10:00 PM will be strictly enforced. South Main is great to let us use the space; let's not ruin it by disturbing our neighbors after 10:00.
